AI search visibility

What is GEO and how it helps patients find your practice.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a business easy for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini to find, trust and cite in their answers. DAS Consultants does GEO and answer engine optimization (AEO) for independent medical practices, so when a patient asks an AI assistant for a provider, your practice has a fair chance of being one of the names it gives.

The Shift

Search has changed.
Has your strategy?

For 20 years, SEO meant ranking on Google's blue links. That still matters, but it is no longer the whole picture. AI-written answers such as Google AI Overviews often appear above the standard results, and they cite specific sources. GEO gets your practice cited.

Traditional SEO

Rank in a list of links

  • Patient searches Google, sees 10 blue links
  • Your practice is link #3 — maybe they click
  • Competitors are links #1 and #2
  • Patient reads multiple sites and decides
  • You compete on clicks, not recommendations
  • When a Google AI summary appears, users click a standard result in 8% of visits[1]
✦ GEO — The New Standard

Be the AI's recommendation

  • Patient asks ChatGPT or Google AI a question
  • AI generates a direct answer — citing YOUR practice
  • Your practice can be one of the few names in the answer
  • Patient reads your name as the expert authority
  • You win on recommendation, not competition
  • Results build on accurate, consistent information about your practice
The Process

How we make AI
recommend you.

GEO is a structured process: make your practice's information clear, consistent and well sourced, so AI tools can understand it and cite it.

01

Authority Content Architecture

We build a structured web of authoritative content around your specialty — in a clear, structured format that AI tools can read and quote. Think of it as teaching AI what you're the expert in.

✦ E-E-A-T Signals + Structured Data
02

AI Citation Optimization

We ensure your practice appears in the specific data sources AI search engines pull from — knowledge graphs, medical directories, reputable review platforms, and citation networks.

✦ Knowledge Graph + Citation Seeding
03

Conversational Query Mapping

We map every natural language question patients ask AI assistants to content that positions your practice as the answer — "who's the best dentist near me for implants?" has a clear, accurate answer on your site to draw from.

✦ Intent Mapping + NLP Optimization
04

Reputation Signal Amplification

Reviews, ratings and mentions on reputable sites are among the signals AI tools draw on when deciding which practices to name. We systematically build these signals so AI models treat your practice as the trusted authority.

✦
Google AI Overview

Google's AI summary appears above the standard results for many searches. Brands cited in one get 35% more organic clicks than when they are not cited[4].

💎
Gemini

Google's Gemini assistant is built into Android, Chrome and Google Search, so it reaches patients in many places.

Everything you've
been wondering about GEO.

Plain answers to the questions practices ask most about GEO.

Talk to a GEO Expert →
What is GEO?+
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is making your practice easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini to find, understand and cite. It covers your website content, your listings, your reviews and how consistently your practice is described across the web. The goal is to be one of the practices an AI assistant names when a patient asks for a recommendation. Read more in What is GEO? The Complete Guide for Private Practices.
How is GEO different from SEO?+
SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of links, while GEO aims to get your practice named inside the answer an AI tool writes. The two rely on many of the same foundations, but they do not always line up: only 37.9% of URLs cited in Google AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 results for the same query[5]. See SEO vs GEO for Dental Practices for a worked comparison.
How long does GEO take to show results?+
There is no fixed timeline. Each AI tool refreshes its sources on its own schedule, and results depend on how much accurate, consistent information about your practice already exists. Early fixes, such as correcting listings and adding clear answers to your site, are usually the first changes to take hold.
Can a small practice compete with hospital systems in AI search?+
Yes, it can. AI tools answer specific questions, and a focused practice that clearly explains its specialty, providers, location and services gives them exactly the kind of source they can cite. Large systems have more pages, but that does not make them the best answer to a narrow local question. See How to Compete With Larger Cardiology Groups as a Private Practice.
How do you measure AI visibility?+
AI visibility is measured by asking AI tools the questions your patients actually ask and recording whether your practice is named, how it is described and which sources are cited. Repeating the same set of questions over time shows whether visibility is improving. Website analytics can also show visits that arrive from AI tools.
Does GEO replace SEO?+
No. Patients still use Google: 48% of patients said they use Google to find new healthcare providers[6]. GEO builds on the same groundwork as local SEO, so the two work best together.
Is GEO safe for a medical practice?+
Yes. GEO works with public information about your practice, such as services, providers, hours and locations, so no patient information is involved. Content should be accurate, reviewed by your clinicians and free of outcome promises, which is good practice for any health website anyway.
